Journalists On the Ground: Citizens and Pros, Could Change the World for the Better

The bombing on the PATH train was not covered by the New York Times or Washington Post first, but rather by daily commuters who take the PATH. To get more coverage for news in the world today, citizen journalists are the assistants to the professional journalists who work for big companies.

Citizen journalists have been on the rise every year, as the number of them has increased “by 145% each year,” which, in other terms, means that there will be “at least 13 times as many citizen journalists” compared to now, according to SONY. Due to the rise of smartphones, the Web, and social media, it allows anybody to have the freedom to share anything. It allows the world to have “raw insights into events that may not have been covered by mainstream media outlets,” which leads to a more personalized view of what is happening in the world, according to Journalism University.

On the other hand, professional journalism heavily relies on ethics and professional standards. Although citizen journalists could provide the videos immediately after an event has happened, professional journalists focus on the accuracy of but also the “on depth, investigation, and context,” of what they are writing, according to Journalism University.  Since they work for a bigger corporation who have much more to lose than citizens, they need to double-check everything.

Despite all of this, citizens and professional journalists must work together to achieve a fast but also accurate article. For example, a professional journalist could use footage from an event captured by a citizen for their article. To make sure the ethics of a professional journalist are still there, they would have to verify the details of the event and provide content.

In addition to that, when citizen journalists and professionals work together, they could amplify voices that are being shut down. By spreading these videos taken by citizen journalists by journalists who work for big corporations, they could “bring attention to issues that may be ignored by mainstream media,” according to Journalism University.

Although for citizen and professional journalists, working together might be hard due to the verification and ethics behind it, the result at the end is worth it.
